Larry E. Sitzman Youth in Nebraska Agriculture Scholarship

From a young age, Larry E. Sitzman was instilled with a deep sense of patriotism, a commitment to serving his nation, and a profound respect for its leaders, values he inherited from his parents. His desire to serve was further fueled when he heard John F. Kennedy's Inaugural Address in high school, particularly the famous line, "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country."
His lifelong passion has been agriculture, and he has dedicated his life to serving this sector in various capacities and leadership roles. Sitzman is renowned for his outspoken nature, his defense of different viewpoints, and his ability to pose thought-provoking questions. His service includes numerous state and national agricultural boards, culminating in his appointment as the Director of Agriculture for Nebraska in 1991. He concluded his professional career as the Executive Director of the Nebraska Pork Producers Association in 2016. Currently, Sitzman continues to serve as a volunteer leader at the Veterans Administration in Lincoln.
Through his leadership, service, and advocacy, Larry E. Sitzman has made significant contributions to academia, agriculture, the military, and public service. In recognition of his contributions, the Nebraska Pork Producers Association established a scholarship in his name upon his retirement.
Qualification Criteria:
- Applicants must be full-time undergraduate or graduate students currently enrolled in an agriculture-related degree program at a fully accredited college, university, or technical college in Nebraska
- Applicants must have at least one full academic year remaining in their degree program
- Applicants must intend to pursue a career in the agriculture industry after graduation
Selection will be primarily based on leadership qualities and involvement in collegiate or extracurricular activities related to the agriculture industry.
The Larry E. Sitzman Youth in Nebraska Agriculture Scholarship is a $1,000 scholarship that will be awarded annually to one deserving student.
